In honour of Pride, we decided to make our first blog post introducing TALN, and explaining how it was created and what we hope to achieve with it.
Trans Action Legal Network, or TALN, came about as a result of our personal experiences as trans students. When attending diversity events, even those aimed at the LGBTQ+ community, there was a lack of trans representation. While we appreciated the efforts of these events, they couldn’t quite grasp that trans issues are different from those faced by other queer individuals. Since we understand that grasping trans issues is complicated when not personally experiencing them, we decided to take action ourselves. Because of our personal experiences with other societies, and in networking events, we believe we are in the best position to create a network that will support binary and non-binary trans people as they progress through their professional careers. We want to accomplish this by making events that will connect trans people in different stages of their academic and professional life. These events will include panels where trans professionals can share their experiences, discussions of the issues faced today by trans people both inside and outside of the workplace, networking opportunities, and student-led events where we will be able to create a community.
In addition to the events described above, we wanted to create this blog as another outlet for our members to share their experiences. The posts can be about trans topics, but also academic interests, commercial awareness, and application advice.
